1 David Needleman has been capturing moments and communicating his subjects’ unique perspectives and personalities since graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. For Watch , he turned his lens on CBS’s morning show and The NFL Today ’s Nate Burleson (“Nate Expectations,” pg. 60). “Nate’s charm and energy was infectious,” says Needleman, who photographed Burleson in his home in New Jersey. “From the moment we arrived, he couldn’t have been more genuinely gracious and kind. I was endlessly impressed by his innate sense of style and ability to let it come through within each picture.” Needleman’s celebrity portraiture has appeared in L’Uomo Vogue , Vanity Fair, Out , WSJ Magazine , and more. He lives and works in NYC and Los Angeles.

2 Growing up in a small town in Georgia, new Watch assistant editor Michelle Darrisaw had access to only five channels: CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, and PBS. “My love for CBS programming—particularly the daytime soaps and crime dramas—has continued to grow over the years,” she says, “so it’s a dream come true to join the Watch team! I get to geek out over TV, promoting the shows and cast members I love.” Darrisaw has written for Jezebel , Cooking Light , Southern Living , Essence , Oprah Daily, and was the in-house copywriter for Tidal music streaming service. She lives in Brooklyn.

3 Alex Bhattacharji discovered just how charismatic and easygoing Nate Burleson is off camera while profiling The NFL Today analyst and co-host of CBS’s morning show (“Nate Expectations,” pg. 60). “Interviewing Nate, who is such a polished media personality, was a little bit like journalistic judo,” says Bhattacharji. “He was able to predict my follow-up questions or pick up on my lines like I was kicking to a member of the same in-studio team. With Nate, it feels like football was a stop on the way to his real calling.” Bhattacharji is a contributing editor at WSJ. Magazine . The Los Angeles–based screenwriter and journalist has written for The New York Times , Men’s Health , Rolling Stone , Esquire , and other publications.

4 New York City–based entertainment journalist Mara Reinstein pulls double duty for Watch , profiling the cast of CBS’s sequel series CSI: Vegas (“What Happens in Vegas,” pg. 76) and Survivor host Jeff Probst (“Carrying the Torch,” pg. 82). When she’s not watching ’80s movies or interviewing celebrities for publications such as The Hollywood Reporter , The New York Times , Variety , Parade , and The Cut , Reinstein loves traveling. On her list of destinations are 16 set visits to Survivor filming locations across the world. Cue her excitement for the long-awaited Season 41. “[Jeff’s] passion for the show is the real deal, and he’s particularly excited about this new season, which takes the game in a new direction,” she says. “I can’t wait to watch!”

On location with Nate Burleson, the Watch magazine crew, and photographer David Needleman, Franklin Lakes, NJ

Team Building W HEN I ARRIVED AT OUR COVER SHOOT WITH CBS’s morning show and The NFL Today ’s Nate Burleson a few months ago, he and photographer David Needleman were deep in conversation— and deep in Burleson’s impressive closet. I watched as David and Nate selected the perfect shirts, jackets, shoes, and hats (custom made by Travis Austin), creating sartorial combinations that few of us could ever hope to duplicate. The two men had never met before, yet they worked together as if they’d known each other for years. As David started shooting and Nate moved into various poses—to a great playlist with everything fromMichael Jackson to Kylie Minogue—we saw one amazing image after another appear on the Digitech screen. It was the creative equivalent of watching one of the football players Nate covers every fall Sunday catch a perfectly thrown spiral from his quarterback. There’s nothing like finding perfect teammates, whether it’s on the field, among your friends and family, or this fall with the arrival of CSI: Vegas . Diehard fans will be excited to see original cast members Jorja Fox, William Petersen, and Wallace Langham (among others) return to the team of forensic investigators. They will be joined by the incredible Paula Newsome, Mandeep Dhillon, Matt Lauria, and Mel Rodriguez. We sat down with our other cover subjects, the three remarkable women of CSI , to hear what lies ahead for them and their co-stars this season.

If you’re looking for even more examples of great teams (I’m a long-suffering Eagles fan, so count me in), you will love Ghosts , a hilarious new comedy about a young couple who inherit a very old house and all the souls of the home’s past residents who’ve never moved out. And could there be any greater example of the impor- tance of teamwork than Survivor ? Back for its 41st season, the real- ity competition feels as exciting as ever, thanks to host Jeff Probst and a fresh crop of eager contestants. Our Watch team (we’re small, but we get the job done—are you listening, Eagles?) welcomes you to this fall issue. Enjoy!

Legends of the Fall Returning fan favorites, exciting spinoffs, and inspired reboots highlight the new season lineups of CBS and The CW. BY NATE MILLADO

What It’s About: Say “aloha” to the first female special agent in charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor, Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey). Her unwavering team of specialists balance duty to both family and country while investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security, and the mysteries of the island paradise itself. Who’s in It: Vanessa Lachey, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Jason Antoon, and Noah Mills WhyWe Love It: After a year and a half of being cooped up at home, we all need some escapism—

They’ll join forces to deploy the latest forensic techniques to do what they do best— follow the evidence.

BEST OF THE REST

All CW, All Week For the first time ever, The CW will air a slew of shows seven nights a week—kicking off on Sundays with a reboot of Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple and a U.S. version of Killer Camp (think Survivor meets retro slasher flicks). The Flash and Riverdale both return November 16 with special five- episode events to begin their new seasons on Tuesdays. Milestone Episodes Blue Bloods celebrates its 250th family dinner, while NCIS: Los Angeles premieres with its 300th episode! The Tribe Has Spoken Survivor is back! Due to the pandemic, the long-running reality comp sat on the sidelines for a year. But Season 41— and dimpled host Jeff Probst—is set to return to its familiar Wednesday night home. Bravo to SEAL Team The David Boreanaz–fronted series is heading to Paramount+, and the move to the game-changing streamer will allow the action-packed drama to go darker (and maybe with a few F-bombs). SEAL Team will air its first four episodes of Season 5 on CBS this fall before relocating to its new digs.

What It’s About: Over the past century, 4,400 people have vanished without a trace. Yet last night, inexplicably, they were all returned in an instant to Detroit without having aged a day, with no memory of what happened to them, and with a few … upgrades. These unwilling time travelers, collectively the 4400, must grapple with their impossible new reality as the government races to understand the phenomenon, analyze the potential threat, and contain the story. Who’s in It: Joseph David-Jones, Ireon Roach, Brittany Adebumola, Cory Jeacoma, TL Thompson, Jaye Ladymore, Derrick A. King, Khailah Johnson, Autumn Best, and Amarr Wooten WhyWe Love It: The series—starring future two- time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali—ran for four seasons on USA Network and ended with a cliffhanger! This time around, 4400 will focus on folks who were overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized.

What It’s About: A couple of city slickers—sunny journalist Samantha (Rose McIver) and promising chef Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar)— throw caution and money to the wind when they inherit a beautiful but rundown country house and decide to turn it into a B&B. Only it’s already inhabited by guests— the many spirits of deceased residents who call it home. Dream Team: (l to r) Rachel Smith, Matt Cohen, Nischelle Turner, Kevin Frazier, and Lauren Zima

That’s Entertainment Happy 40th anniversary, Entertainment Tonight ! The history-making news magazine didn’t just talk about the stars … they were right there with them. BY NATE MILLADO

while Johnson serves as executive producer. This past year, ET cel- ebrated its 40th anniversary—in the middle of a global pandemic, no less. But ET is No. 1 for a reason, and the coronavirus “wasn’t an excuse to back off that,” Johnson says. “It was simply a new challenge to navigate. We have the best team. We don’t get com- placent.” ( ET recently won its sixth Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment News Program.) To commemorate this decades- spanning milestone, Watch caught up with Turner and Frazier, whom Johnson calls “the definition of a dynamic duo.”

E VERYONE’S GOT AN ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT origin story. Nischelle Turner grew up on a farm in the Midwest watching Mary Hart and John Tesh and thinking, “How many worlds away that was from my experience and my existence,” she recalls. Kevin Frazier was an in- demand sportscaster who’d tune in to ET while getting ready for SportsCenter . And journalism student Erin Johnson would tell her professors her goal was to someday work at ET . Today Turner and Frazier are co-anchors of TV’s top entertainment news magazine,

phone if I did that! NT: Maybe I’ll make it mine!

Why do you think ET has resonated with so many viewers over four decades? KF: It was the first. People thought it would be ridiculous to have a show every day and talk about entertainment like that. But then you’ve seen so many iconic stars and iconic moments on ET . And so I think that it’s one of those legacy programs where you grew up watching with your grandmother or your mom and you watch now with your kids. We continue to deliver the gold standard of entertainment. The ET theme song … how many times a day does someone come up to you and hum those iconic six notes? NT: Well, I just had Joey McIntyre and Deb- bie Gibson sing it to me [on the show]! Usu- ally [it happens] when I’m in the airport. And once I get on the plane, one of the flight attendants would.

in March 2021, making you and Kevin the first Black duo in ET ’s 40-year history. Has that sunk in yet? NT: When the announcement happened, [Kevin] called me and I was very emotional and he got very emotional. And it meant the world to me because I really saw his heart and I knew that he had been fighting for me in so many ways, so it was like an affirmation for him as well. To have this

so many ways he’s like the Old Man to me. Kevin Frazier is very straitlaced and by-the- book. I have so many nicknames for him, like Milk Dud or Word Salad. We have a running joke on “Can Kevin get through a sentence without adding words to it?” On the outside, we give each other a lot of hell. But it’s always rooted in love. Kevin, when you were named anchor in 2014, what advice did Mary Hart give you? KF: What’s so funny is I always talk to Mary, all the time, from the first day I ever came on! There is no one in this business who can make a “turn” like Mary Hart. She can go from the happiest story to a sad story and do it so beautifully and easily. And that was one of the first things I tried to borrow from her—like, how do you do it? She is the queen. What’s been your favorite interview or moment? NT: The day that I got to meet and interview my namesake, Nichelle Nichols,

who was Uhura from Star Trek . That meant the world to me. KF: I’ll tell you one of the big moments of all time was at the Democratic National Convention, when Barack Obama was going to be named the presidential nomi- nee. My father was so emotional because he never thought he’d see something like this in his lifetime. And then we [inter- viewed] Oprah, and she said to me, “I cried my eyelashes off.” And this quote went [viral] around the world. But it was just such a genuine moment where she came out and literally her mascara had run and she was crying. You cried your eyes out. I’ll never forget that moment. Nischelle, you and Kevin both covered the NFL—and the Oscars are basically the Super Bowl of Hollywood. Does the red carpet excite you, terrify you, all of the above? NT: I still get butterflies in my stomach when we walk on the red carpet. I like the hustle and bustle of it, the glamour and beauty of it. The fact that we’re stuck in a little spot and can’t breathe, and the biggest celebrities in the world are coming to talk to us. All of that is electrifying to me. The

As a sideline reporter, you had to regur- gitate a bunch of random stats about ath- letes. What’s a random piece of trivia that you know about a celebrity? NT: Oh gosh, so much. Did you know that Brad Pitt left the University of Missouri Journalism School two credits short of graduating? I went to the same university, so we’re desperately trying to get him to come back and finish! At what point in your entertainment career did you realize you’d made it? Kevin, becom- ing pals with Prince has to rank up there. KF: And my wife is from Minnesota, so sit- ting at dinner in Prince’s house is crazy! I first met him at a party at his house in L.A. after the NAACP Image Awards—Oprah, Gayle, Stevie Wonder, everybody was there—and we struck up a friendship. So one night, Prince calls and says, “Hey, can you come over?” and I get there and he answers the door himself … in flip-flops! He said, “I just wanted you to look at my new website with me.” So we hung and had a little tech-y conversation, but every

now and then I’d look over and think, “Wait a minute … it’s just me and Prince here?” NT: I think it was the day that I came in and the receptionist told me I had flowers. I said, “OK, bring them up.” And they said, “No, no, no, you have to come down.” And I see this bouquet, no, it was more like a bushel or tree, I don’t know. And I hadn’t even seen the card, but I immediately

ET EARWORM Dah-dah-dah-dah— dah-dah ! Composer Michael Mark looks back on his iconic theme.

I was in New York, where I’ve had my career doing submissions for jingles and underscoring, things like that. When you were doing a commercial or a theme song, it was kind of a standard convention to see if you could write something that had the rhythm of the product or the name of the show. So when they told

me the title, I was trying to do something that sounded like (sings) En-ter-tain-ment To-night ! I probably spent two weeks sitting at a piano until I finally ended up with that string of notes. My wife, Mary, and I sit down at 7:30, and we watch Entertainment Tonight . Every time a celebrity sings it, it’s just thrilling to me. That’s neat. I loved Bill Murray doing it; Tom Hanks used to imitate elec- tronic drums in that one version of the song. after the news and it was like … you could just take a breath and say, “You know what, I know we’re going to hell in a handbasket, but can I just have a little bit of fun and kind of relax?” And not to minimize what was going on in the world, we were still paying attention to that. But through crazy times, Entertainment Tonight has been and always will be there for you. It’s a breath of fresh air.

What was it like celebrating your 40th- anniversary season during a global pandemic? NT: Even though nobody knew what the next day would bring, we never missed a beat. We never missed a show. We never let our audience down. We just stood strong and we figured it out.

COATS

The coat is another key component of fall’s new look, often replacing a jacket. Maxi, knee length, and multi-ply cashmere. Layering, tucking, untucking, cinching the waist, adding a bag, a mannish shoe, or a chunky boot makes it modern.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

airsweekdays at 12:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams onParamount+.

The wardrobe closet at The Young and the Restless studio

EACH CHARACTER HAS A CLOSET “And their own color palette, too, which we stick to very faithfully. We put just as much thought into building a clean, simple wardrobe for one character as we do into creating a more eclectic one for another, with lots of accessories and pattern mix- ing. When putting Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) looks together, I’ll ask my team if they think an earring is too much, and the response is always no, because she’s such a powerful force that nothing ever wears her. The rule for Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) is to go asymmetrical—her clothes are often off- the-shoulder tops, wrap blouses, and one- sleeve dresses. Victoria (Amelia Heinle) is influenced by the Victorian era but updated and not costume-y at all—high necks, puffed sleeves, a cummerbund at the waist. “There are a lot of elements involved in dressing Sharon (Sharon Case), which makes it super fun. She has more pieces in her wardrobe than anyone because her style is a boho mix of a camisole with three necklaces, a jacket with fur, plus tights and boots. For Amanda, we researched how she dressed before and brainstormed how to empower her new character in a different way. I’d describe her wardrobe as having a soft Grecian or 1930s feel, but modern at the same time.”

DayDreamer Emmy-winning The Young and the Restless costume designer David Zyla spills his wardrobe secrets. BY MEIRAV DEVASH

Amanda (Mishael Morgan) is never going to show up looking like Mariah (Camryn Grimes).” To craft a look that makes sense in the Y&R universe, Zyla lets the clothes help tell the story. “If it’s a sexy scene and the character is coming from work in the emer- gency room,” he says, “you can’t dress her in a strapless cocktail dress, but she can wear a sweater that illustrates sexiness in that moment. If there’s a scene written for a character lurking in the shadows, covered in blood, you have to dress him in a light- color shirt so viewers can see it.” Zyla let us in on some of his style secrets:

A ND WE THOUGHT PICKING costume designer David Zyla is responsible for dressing a huge, beloved cast of char- acters—approximately 2,000 outfits a year. Every character has their own color palette, their clothes are tailored for a custom fit, out something to wear was chal- lenging. At 250 episodes per sea- son, The Young and the Restless and they never—ever—repeat outfits. While that may sound daunting, Zyla loves his work. “Dressing each character is fascinating because they’re so well written,” he says. “My job is to find the clothes to illuminate their individual personalities.
