EDITOR’S LETTER | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
W HEN WE ASKED THIS MONTH’S COVER Home Alone , and Elf were at the top of their lists. My first thought: OK, excellent choices. And Elf is a great movie, but it’s pretty recent to be considered one of the “greatest.” My second thought: Wait. When did Elf come out? And then my third, after checking IMDb and discovering that it was released almost 20 years ago: Yikes . I’m old. I say this because my favorite holiday movies are really old: White Christmas and the “Sisters” song. Holiday with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It’s a Wonderful Life with that lingering, romantic moment between Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed shar- ing the telephone. And, much more recent (at least in comparison), Trading Places . All of it. subjects, Young Sheldon ’s Iain Armitage, Montana Jordan, and Raegan Revord, to name their all- time greatest holiday movies, A Christmas Story , No matter what you choose to watch, celebrate, and, of course, eat during this merry season, we have you covered. Not sure what to get your loved ones? Check out our luxe annual gift guide, curated by Watch ’s style director, Sasha Charnin Morrison. Having her on our team—usually swathed in one of The Nice List
Young Sheldon ’s Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and Iain Armitage (also below)
her favorite Norma Kamali sleeping bag coats and Chanel Sycomore—is a gift I’m grateful for every day. Looking for delicious meals to impress friends and family? Check out NCIS: Hawai’i ’s Vanessa Lachey’s new cookbook, Life
from Scratch . You’re going to want to try everything. And if you’re suffering from holiday overload, take a break with our guide to the best and creepiest Twilight Zone episodes ever. So now that I’ve realized that Elf has attained the proper pop culture gravitas that comes with age, perhaps it’s time to give it some more love. To paraphrase Buddy, we at Watch hope you can make gingerbread houses, eat cookie dough, go ice skating, and maybe even hold hands with someone you love this holiday season.

business proposition? JC: Let me put it this way: “An up-and- coming struggling chef and a hotshot lawyer work together to pull off a scheme that will benefit them both. Their plans become muddled, however, due to real feelings hiding underneath their carefully crafted facade.” Boom! Wow, that’s some elevator pitch. Sold! Were you already a rom-com aficionado, or did you have to pre- pare for the role by bingeing Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan flicks? JC: I mean, come on, ’90s rom-coms were so epic! They were everything. I was totally stoked to finally be able to play inside of one. Even though I wanted to dive into all of them, I really tried not to because I didn’t want to subcon- sciously bring remnants of those movies into this story. I really wanted to find our own organic chemistry, our own organic magic, and have this story be its own thing as much as possible. Well, what the world needs now is love, sweet love—especially after the 2020 we had! JC: That was actually such a big deal to me when I accepted the offer because I realize how important these holidays are for families who are finally able to gather—without as much fear as we had last year. It really meant a lot to me to be a part of a project like this after

“You put on a holiday movie and it reignites that sense of hope and faith that the holidays are all about.” what she does, and I absolutely relate to all of that. The arduous, uncertain journey of building an acting career for myself … I never doubted that that would be my reality, and Maria definitely has that same unshakable drive that keeps her striving through the hardships. But I think where we differ is, I do not love being in the kitchen. It’s sort of therapy for her, but for me, historically speaking, it’s been more of a nightmare scenario. I am not in control. I’m sweating. I’m a hot mess trying to keep it together. But I’m working to change that, to find the beauty in cooking. I’m trying to have the grace to let myself epically ruin some dishes and learn to be OK with that.
what we’ve all gone through [during the pandemic]. I wasn’t able to be with my mom last Christmas because of the cir- cumstances, so hopefully this year I will be on her couch, in her house, watching this movie. Why are holiday movies so popular? Is it because they’re the TV equiva- lent of comfort food? JC: That’s a great way to put that! They give you those warm and fuzz- ies. And there’s always a lesson, right? To appreciate what you have and those around you. Sometimes the reality of the holidays doesn’t add up; life is far from being perfect. But you know, you put on a holiday movie and it reignites that sense of hope and faith that the holidays are all about. I hope that each person watching A Christmas Proposal takes something special from this movie and that it makes them feel a little bit brighter and a little less alone. Are you anything like Maria—or are you a complete 180? JC: Maria is strong, determined, goal- oriented, and she is passionate about
Maria and Julian have such amazing chemistry. What was it like working with Adam Rodriguez? JC: The guy was a dream to work with, honestly. He is so warm and kind. He’s giving. He’s prepared. When he shows up, he shows up for whomever is in the scene with him. He’ll run lines a million times with you. He will talk about the scene. I learned so much from him. And he’s hilarious! He does voices, like, crazy characters. We just laughed constantly! CBS will air Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer ( Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. ET/PT ) for the 57th consecutive year. Any fond memories of watching that? JC: That’s one of the specials that I will never, ever tire of. I remember as a kid being fascinated by the stop-motion. I was like, “What kind of special magic is this?” I was addicted. The whole thing is so beautiful. And then one of my favorite moments? When Rudolph says: “I’m cute! I’m cute! She said I’m cuuuuuuuuuute!” That classic warms my heart.

Happy 40th Birthday, MTV! “And they said we wouldn’t last,” said a cheeky Madonna at the 2021 VMA Awards, paying homage to the network that made the Material Girl a household name. MTV debuted on August 1, 1981, with their first music video (The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star”). Through four decades, MTV has doled out hundreds of Moon Person trophies (from The Cars to Lil Nas X) and continues to reinvent reality television ( The Real World , Jersey Shore , The Challenge ).

Toys in every store, windows aglow with magical lights, and the teens from the hit comedy Young Sheldon calling out their picks for all-time great- est holiday movie. “I mean, who doesn’t love Home Alone ? It’s the modern classic,” says Iain Armitage, 13, now in his fifth season as Sheldon Cooper, the boy genius and future theoretical physicist whose academic gifts are matched only by his inability to read social cues. His character is the child ver- sion of the same Sheldon that Jim Parsons por- trayed for 279 episodes on The Big Bang Theory . “I’d say A Christmas Story , or wait, no, Elf ,” says Raegan Revord, also 13, who plays Sheldon’s more outgoing twin sister, Missy.

CLASS ACT: When they’re not filming, Revord and Armitage go to school on set. “Our teachers are awesome, and they like to throw holiday parties,” reports Revord.

“This is gonna sound crazy,” Montana Jordan, 18, says in his signature East Texas drawl. He plays the twins’ older, down-to- earth brother, Georgie. “I don’t really watch movies or TV. Can I also go with Home Alone and Elf ?” Whatever gets you through to New Year’s, right? The group of actors is chatting from different dressing rooms (and separate Zoom screens) due to pandemic protocols. But even social dis- tancing can’t dampen the fun-loving spirit that’s kept this trio giggling since the series premiered in 2017. Revord bangs on her dressing room wall, which gets Armitage, who’s next door, to scream—“Hey, I heard that! Stop it!”—which prompts Jordan, who’s down the hall, to whisper into his laptop, “See what I’m dealing with here?” CBS Watch spoke to Young Sheldon ’s young trio about the show’s smashing success and their holiday hopes and dreams.
You’re five seasons in. What’s it like looking back on the early seasons of Young Sheldon ? REVORD: Oh, it’s insane. We were so tiny back then. Montana sounds like a little baby compared to now. JORDAN: [ Puts on a deeper voice. ] Ha! I guess my voice has changed somewhat, hasn’t it! ARMITAGE: It’s just so funny watching us trying to nail these char- acters. It was all so new in the beginning. Now it’s old hat. I come in, get into costume, and I’m Sheldon. It’s that easy. REVORD: It doesn’t even feel like coming to work now. It’s more like I’m hanging out with my second family. How do you stay grounded when you’re on a hit show? JORDAN: I could give you a long answer, but the short answer would be: I’ve got a good family that keeps me in check. I go back

home to Texas as much as I can, and if I did ever get too ahead of myself, my family would probably disown me. I still
wear clothes from Walmart. REVORD: Since I started acting, I’ve really, really tried to treat everyone I meet the way I want to be treated. I got that from my family, and I love that advice. Also, I have a gecko named Samuel, and I just look at him and go, “Yeah, life’s good.” ARMITAGE: Don’t get me wrong. We love our work. But for me, the most fun thing is playing at home with my friends and my little cousins. There’s nothing more normal than that. Tell us about some holiday traditions you’re looking forward to this year. ARMITAGE: I go to Georgia and stay at my grandma’s. She has 12 grandkids, so there are always like 60,000 people in the house. It’s a big, crazy, chaotic, silly, messy, fun holiday. We make cookies, we make gingerbread houses. We hang out, we wrap gifts, we play games, we sing, we run around. It’s completely awesome. REVORD: My family’s also in the Deep South, and we couldn’t go back last year, so I’m really looking forward to us all getting together again and eating those southern foods. JORDAN: Like peanut brittle? Because that’s what I’m look- ing forward to. My grandma makes it, and, gosh, I mean, there’s nothing better. Sugar rush!

In case anyone’s asking, what’s on your gift wish lists? ARMITAGE: I’m pretty weird. I’m into Rus- sian things. I love Russian candies and Rus- sian classical music and Russian pop music. I even learned a little Russian over the pan- demic. [ Starts singing loudly in Russian .] REVORD: Ummm, oka-a-y. Can I jump in here? I am a huge bookworm, so if I ever get a book, that makes me super happy. I love the Scythe series. It’s a dystopian future-type world. I started reading it, and I was like, “Nope, I am not putting this down.”
Any New Year’s resolutions? JORDAN: More time in Texas!
“I co get cost

REVORD: I’m trying to write a book of fantasy fiction. I want to finish that. ARMITAGE: My main resolution is to become a black belt in Tae Kwon Do— in case Master Gan is reading this. He’s my teacher.

You three are very impressive! It was announced this year that Young Sheldon will remain on the air at least through 2024. Anything you’d like to see your characters get to do more of? REVORD: I’d love Missy to have more bonding time with Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry). They’re so sweet together. JORDAN: I’m excited to explore George Jr.’s entrepreneurial side. We know he grows up to own a tire shop. I want to see what gets him to that point. ARMITAGE: Oh, yikes. I guess I’d say more stunts. Sheldon is ridic- ulously smart with his mind but not so smart with his body. We did one scene where he fights with his own clone and gets dragged across a table and has a chalkboard smashed over his head. I’d love to do more stuff like that.
JORDAN: Honestly, you don’t need to get me anything . I don’t order stuff. I don’t want stuff. But I’ll tell you this: The best gift I ever got was sitting on my front porch one day. It was a box with a note saying, “Hey, I love your show,” and inside was an arcade machine. Not a big one. Kind of a medium-size one, and it had a bunch of different games on it, like Mario, and … what’s that one where the little round thing eats all the fruits?
55
Pac-Man? JORDAN: Yeah! That’s it! That’s on there. It’s so much fun.
Playing Favorites The Sheldon kids pick their No. 1 episode
“BIBLE CAMP AND A CHAR- IOT OF LOVE” (SEASON 4) “Anything involving a vehicle I love,
“A PAGER, A CLUB, AND A CRANKY BAG OF WRINKLES” (SEASON 4)
“JIU-JITSU, BUBBLE WRAP, AND YOU-HOO” (SEASON 1) “For some reason, I thought it was hilarious when Sheldon got bullied by a 6-year-old little girl. I’ve studied martial arts for over nine years, and I love the line where he says, ‘I’ve read a book on jiu-jitsu. And I’m prepared to throw it at you!’” —Armitage
“I love the episode where Miss Annie (Potts) and Miss Reba (McEntire) sing a karaoke duet of ‘Islands in the Stream.’ That was the best thing ever. The funniest part was watching Miss Reba sing badly, which was a very rare moment because she’s so talented at singing in real life. It really shows how great an actor she is.” —Revord
but this one was so funny. Georgie gets the van of his dreams. It’s got stinky blue shag carpeting on the inside, including on the ceiling, and a foldout couch. His dad calls it a motel on wheels. But I’m a car guy, so I could do a hundred episodes like these.” —Jordan
