EDITOR’S LETTER | JULY/AUGUST 2021

Arielle Vandenberg on set at Milk Studios, L.A., with hair stylist Riawna Capri, makeup artist Nikki DeRoest, and manicurist Vanessa Sanchez McCullough

finished and a child that needs open space to run in safely, and gelato a pleasant walk away, Santa Barbara is where this can happen. Susan Pocharski, Deputy

Editor : Our screened-in porch— especially when we have a few friends over for dinner, light some candles, feel the breeze, and cheer that the mosquitoes can’t get to us. Alice Ross, Photo Editor : Dorset, England. It’s a magical, lush county with beautiful fields to walk through and pebbled beaches. Cream teas (scones, jam, and clotted cream with end- less cups of tea) and gorgeous, old pub gardens for a pint and a ploughman’s lunch every day. Heaven. Lindsay Brown, Executive Editor : Fire Island. Days are spent at the beach and evenings are spent strolling through the car- free streets and popping into outdoor restaurants to order up a few Rocket Fuels—Fire Island’s signature cocktail. Think piña colada, plus rum punch, plus twice the alcohol. Nothing’s better. Nate Millado, Contributing Writer : The Penguin Habitat at Central Park Zoo. The exhibit is kept at a cool 32 degrees F— a nice respite from the sweltering heat. Plus, penguins are just too darn cute! Natalia Rybka, Integrated Advertising Manager : Santorini. There’s nothing quite as mesmerizing as those striking views of the volcanic island against the deep blue Mediterranean. As for me, it’s the beach in Cape May, New Jersey, when the sun is setting. And if there are a few dogs frolicking in the waves, even better. Here’s to a beautiful summer!

W ELCOME TO OUR FIRST-EVER BEAUTY ISSUE! This month’s cover features the absolutely stunning and delightful Arielle Vandenberg, host of the hit show Love Island . We had a blast getting to know her better, and we know you will, too. We’re also bringing you this season’s best lip and nail colors, fragrances, and fashion—everything you need to celebrate summer in style. And speaking of summer, it seems like we all needed this one more than ever, the Watch team included. In the spirit of this special issue, I asked teammembers for their “most beautiful” places to spend these long and lazy days. Chris Ross, Director of Photography : Maine, particularly hav- ing lobster rolls with my family at McLoons Lobster Shack on Spruce Head Island after a refreshing swim in the Atlantic. Sasha Charnin Morrison, Style Director : NYC. Never left, never will. I am dewy, mani and pedicured, half naked, and always ready for a cocktail. Ed Mann, Creative Director : Santa Barbara, a beautiful whis- per in summer, with its small beaches, unique shops, and arrest- ing views of the ocean and mountains. If there is a book to be Pretty Special

INFINITE This high-octane sci-fi spectacular stars Mark Wahlberg as Evan McCauley, who’s haunted by recollections of skills he’s never learned and places he’s never visited. Streams exclusively on Paramount+

BIG BROTHER Julie Chen Moonves is one proud momma. “Every season, I feel like I get 16 new kids,” she said in a

recent Clubhouse conversation. “Meeting these new personalities, watching them bond and compete, some fall in love and get married and have children. I always say we have a better success rate at marriages than The Bachelor !” The secret to lasting showmances? “You know the bill of goods you’re getting after living with that person for three months, 24/7. You can’t run and hide.” And while you can expect the unexpected during BB23 ’s 90-minute live move-in premiere, the Chenbot did tease this summer’s theme: the BB Beach Club. “What I’m really looking forward to is for the Big Brother houseguests to be going on vacation and all of us living vicariously through them.” Airs Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+

shine | THE LOOK Glow Rider How can you get that Hollywood lit-from- within skin? Just ask these makeup artists to the stars. BY MEIRAV DEVASH C ELEBRITIES MIGHT have supernaturally perfect skin, but they’re just as human as the rest of us. To achieve that healthy glow, slathering on SPF, staying hydrated, and getting a full night’s sleep is just the beginning. While they’re in the makeup chair, stars often get the scoop on the dewiest skin care products and most effective makeup tricks—which is why we asked their makeup artists for their best glow- getter tips. One such example? Don’t highlight all over or

THE FACE

Tip SMOOTH OUT SKIN

For a bit more coverage, try a lightweight tinted moisturizer. Product 3. Honest Beauty Clean Corrective with Vitamin C Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 , $22 , target.com This feels like nothing but does a lot: One pump evens out the whole face, so skin looks fresh and dewy all over. “Place a moist highlight high on the nose bridge, on cheeks, and on the jawline,” says makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi. If your skin gets greasy, set the T-zone with translucent loose powder. (Skip this after age 35; it accentuates fine lines.) Product 4. Flower Beauty Heatwave Bronzing Essence , $16 , ulta.com These highlighting drops light up the high points of the face. Product 5. NYX Total Control PRO Drop Foundation Illuminator , $14 , nyxcosmetics.com Apply highlighter where the sun would kiss skin, or mix it into your favorite foundation or tinted moisturizer. Tip SHINE STRATEGICALLY

To prevent dullness caused by clogged pores and dead skin cells, Denno applies a natural peel the night before or “right before I put makeup on a client for the red carpet.” Product 1. Tammy Fender Epi-Peel , $80 , thedetoxmarket.com With rosemary, spearmint, and kaolin clay, this resurfacing peel gently transforms skin from dull to bright and radiant.

Tip BRIGHTEN YOUR EYES

Denno likes Kosas wet-to-dry eyeshadows for “that glowy look without worrying that it’s going to move all over the place.” Apply with a fingertip, then buff in with a fluffy brush.

26

Product 2. Kosas 10-Second Liquid Shadows , $28 , credobeauty.com

This liquid eye shadow gives a wash of shimmering color that dries quickly and stays put. Tip GO EASY ON FOUNDATION Less is more. Look in the mirror and see what your face needs (if anything). Got redness, dark circles, or a breakout? “Even skin out with concealer,” Denno says.

you’ll resemble a disco ball. Also, put away the powder highlighter. It won’t create a believable glow. “Powders don’t give off luminosity or bring light to the face. They have a shimmer effect,” says celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno, who thinks skin should look juicy and radiant instead of just shiny. “Look for something cream-based, serum-based, or oil- based with reflective particles in it.” Here’s everything else you need for the glowiest skin of your life.

THE BODY

Product 7. James Read Self Tan Sleep Mask Go Darker Body , $46 , dermstore.com This clear gel tanning mask creates a deep, bronze glow while you sleep and pampers skin overnight with hyaluronic acid, caffeine, and black rose. Tip HIT THE HIGHLIGHTS Dab highlighter on a few key areas for emphasis, says Farolfi, who works with Drew Barrymore. She likes liquid luminizer “for collar bones, shoulders, and shins. You’ll look radiant and photograph really well.” Product 8. Flower Glow Getter Liquid Illuminizer , $13 , flowerbeauty.com Farolfi’s highlighter pick is water-based and dripping with light reflectors. Use it alone or mix it into your favorite foundation, moisturizer, or body lotion.

Tip EXFOLIATE ALL OVER The only thing worse than dull, pasty skin is a patchy self- tanner job. A body wash with skin-polishing sugar crystals prevents this by revealing fresh, smooth skin. The night before bronzing, slough away flakes on knees, elbows, and heels with a damp washcloth. Product 6. Olay Exfoliating & Moisturizing Body Wash , $8 , target.com This renewing facial for the body has brightening vitamin B3 complex, hydrating shea butter, and sugar crystals that buff away dead skin cells.

27

Tip FAKE THE PERFECT POST-VACATION GLOW

Want to look like you just returned from a yacht off Capri? The new easy-to-use bronzing formulas deliver a kiss of sunshine with no streaks or telltale orange tint.

6

7

AT HOME

Tip PRE-GAME YOUR GLOW WITH SKIN CARE Makeup artist Jillian Dempsey’s specialty is “fresh, glowing, amazing-looking faces.” To get maximum radiance, she depuffs with Jillian Dempsey Eye Mask and applies a good moisturizer (she likes Dr. Barbara Sturm Tip

Face Cream) with a 10-minute face massage using her vibrating Gold Sculpting Bar. Move from the jawline up to the cheekbones, from the jawline under the chin and toward the neck, and vertically over “tech lines,” she says.

THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW airsweekdays at 9a.m. ET/PT on CBS.

“To find the perfect glow at a photo shoot, I wait to see Drew under the light. I usually won’t use powder in daylight, but with a flash, yes.”— Fulvia Farolfi

It’s way too easy to be envious of Arielle Vandenberg. Not only is the sunny host spend- ing two months on the big island of Hawaii to preside over the third season of the juicy romantic competition series Love Island , she looks camera-ready just moments after waking up in her hotel room (which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, sigh). FWIW, the Los Angeles–reared actress and social media star appreci- ates it all. “I’m sitting here looking at the water and think- ing ‘How did I get so lucky?’” she says. “I feel very grateful to be here.” Vandenberg, 34, hopped on Zoom to talk romance, her beauty musts, and more. So we’re chatting just a few days before all those cameras roll. Why are you especially excited about this season? Because it’s bigger and better!

“I love my hair and it does its own thing and looks like a hot mess.”

It was cool that we could do the show last year in Las Vegas during the pandemic. But now that we’re on an actual island, it feels like we’re really back. For me, the most fun is seeing who keeps coupling up. And we brought back the [second villa] Casa Amor, so tempta- tions are everywhere! Do you root for a genuine coupling or are you satis- fied with all the drama and twists? I need a couple to get married from the show. That’s my goal in life. I want to say, “I am the matchmaker!” I feel like there’s going to be some real love this year. Even though you’ve been engaged [to actor and con- tent creator Matt Cutshall] since 2019, have you learned anything about love from hosting? You know, these Islanders are without their phones and must get to know each other in a way that’s not normal anymore. I’ve learned we are better without our phones attached to us. You have to ask questions and make eye contact. People don’t do that anymore. But that’s life, right? Gotta ask: How do the Islanders always look so glam in the heat? I know! I do a walk-through in the dressing room before the contestants see it, and it’s fun to see what [the producers] put

in there. It’s stocked with little things like [false] eyelashes and press-on nails and sun- screen. But they must do their own hair and makeup every day. Even though I have no off-camera interactions with them, I will say, “Lookin’ good, girl!” What’s your own beauty routine? I don’t do a lot of makeup— especially in the summer. You’ve got to let your skin breathe. When I wake up, I put some Furtuna skin cleanser on a cotton pad to refresh my face. Then I use the Furtuna eye serum and under-eye cream. Can you tell I’m obsessed with this line? The ingredients are so clean and the bottles are beautiful. My bathroom looks like it should be on Pinterest. Which three beauty essen- tials would you bring on your own love island? Definitely an eyelash curler. If I feel tired, I just pump the curler and I look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I like my

Complexion Rescue from bare Minerals—it’s a tinted mois- turizer with SPF that smooths out my face and doesn’t cover my freckles. And I need my tinted lip balm. And which fashion item did you haul from home? Oh, I immediately packed my tropical muumuu from Spell & the Gypsy. It’s perfect because I can wear it to the beach or on a walk, and it’s so cozy and pretty with the ocean back- drop. I’m going to take a lot of Instagram pics with it. Hair and humidity: Go. I love my hair and it does its own thing and looks like a hot mess. If it’s going to be frizzy and crazy, I make it work for me. Are you more dolled up when Matt visits you? Oh, he’s here! He’s my best friend and my person, and I’m so happy he’s with me because it makes [being here] all that much better. At this point, I feel like we should just get married on the balcony.

For some, it’s a walk on the beach. For others, a poignant interaction with a loved one. But however we describe “beauty,” one thing’s for certain: It’s always more than skin deep.

wife, and knowing that we had a hand in that development, that growth, that becoming, that is beauty right there; that is my most beautiful moment to date. The most beautiful quote

t ul

I define beauty as: The ageless old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder runs deep and very true. For me, beauty can be anything from a look, a glance, a smile, a moment in time, to something deep and resonat- ing, something timeless and everlasting. Beauty can also be earned, developed over time. When I was a child, my mother grew hibiscus in our backyard, and to this day each time I see one of these beautiful flowers, it brings back memories of a time that has moved on. The flower brings back the memories of beauty itself, of moments, of time, of people I love. That, to me, encaptures the breadth of beauty. In turn, the more I spend time in a relationship with someone, the more that develops, the more I start to recognize, to see the beauty that lives inside that person, and from that moment on, the beauty of them only gets deeper. For example, I fell in love with my wife very quickly, and we have been together for some time. However, each and every day I find beauty in her I had not recognized or been aware of previously. Beauty is beauty; it is ever flowing. I pamper myself with: Self-care. That can be anything from a workout to a haircut, getting a manicure or a pedi- cure. Yes, I get a manicure and a pedicure—and I absolutely love it. Particularly when we

go as a family and we’re all seated next to each other—one of the simple joys of life! I grew up surrounded by women, and most of the significant influences in my life have been women, so it’s very easy for me to identify with the idea of taking care of oneself. My beauty icons are: I grew up around Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, and Karl Lagerfeld, so when I think of icons and beauty, I think of these, as individuals and collectively, as they have influ- enced the essence of beauty in such a significant manner. Both of my parents were fash- ion conscious and fashion forward. Looking good was important to both of them, and they had a large influence on me in that sense, so on a more personal note, I would consider my parents to be my beauty-awareness icons. Julian McMahon Actor • FBI: Most Wanted

I’ve ever heard: “I love you, Dad.”

I feel most beautiful when: I’m surrounded by people I love. When I have the opportunity to watch them laugh, give them a hug, or enjoy a conversation, that’s when I feel beauty at its deepest and most profound place.

The most beautiful moment in my life was: When my father said he was proud of me, right before he died. Getting that pride and support from my father was the most beautiful moment of my life.

I feel most beautiful when: I accomplish something and when I’m influential. I like my natural beauty without makeup and wigs. But I feel just as beau- tiful when I’ve been in glam. God made everybody beautiful. It’s what you do with it. My beauty icon is: Glammaster Dell McDonald, who has spearheaded the evolu- tion of my look and makes me beautiful inside and out. I define beauty as: Beauty is confidence. Being comfortable in your own skin and who you are has always rendered the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen. I feel most beautiful when: After a haircut and beard trim. My beard is like makeup for me. When it’s perfectly cut I can’t believe how I look ... so thank you to the barbers. The most beautiful quote I’ve ever heard: It’s so hard for me to pick just one beautiful quote because I have an immense love for words, books, and poetry. However, a quote from National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman has really resonated with me this year: “For there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.”

The most beautiful place I’ve ever been: I really try to find and appreciate the beauty in every place I visit, but I have to admit Santorini, Greece, is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. From the teal waters of the Aegean Sea encircled by black-and pink-sand beaches to the whitewashed cliffside hotels, it’s so serene and picturesque … I hope to go back soon!

I pamper myself by: Taking a bath every day no matter what. Baths can be like a form of meditation and a great excuse to close the door and hide from your family. Sometimes I pretend I’m taking a bath and I just sit in the empty bathtub, where I eat a snack and watch The Housewives on my phone.
